Midnight Flyer 1981 Midnight Flyer

Maggie Bell's one and only album with the band MIDNIGHT FLYER. Maggie formed the group with musicians from bands like Foghat, Whitesnake & Savoy Brown. This was her return to making albums after 2 solo albums in 1974-1975, so the wait was long, but worthy. All the members wrote original material and Maggie is captured in her prime vocally. The band rocks, with many guitar crunching songs matched by Maggie's vocals. The sound could be described at times as a mix of AC/DC , Bad Company and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Mick Ralphs of Bad Company produced it.

Rockers such as the opener HEY BOY, OVER AND OVER, and MIDNIGHT LOVE are fast paced and energy driven. Songs like IN MY EYES and LAST RESORT provide more melodic rock that differentiate for a nice balance. Maggie really gets to work out vocally on SWEET LOVING WOMAN and FRENCH KISSES - songs that are more earthy and bluesy that she can really wail on. The best song they saved for the closer. ROUGH TRADE is a piano laden ballad rocker that is one of the high points in Maggie's canon of classics. It is reminiscent of the great Stone The Crows ballad SUNSET COWBOY with it's use of piano, but the lyric & emotion are more to the point. Definitely a great song that stands out on this CD. There are also 2 bonus tracks that were released on a mini-LP in 1982 - ROCK AND ROLL PARTY and WAITING FOR YOU [the other 3 songs from this EP were taken from this album]. So, you get the complete MIDNIGHT FLYER studio work , and it's definitely a must for every Maggie Bell fan. (gassy goon)

At first glance, this CD will appear to be another flash-in-the-pan teenage Blooze star, totally dependent on the hype machine that proclaims, He's just 17 years old. But what a shock when the music starts, this young Bluesman is The Real Thing. He doesn't need anyone's help as the music speaks for itself and it speaks loud and clear. Talent rules here folks, and Andy Poxon is a Natural who reminds me of but a handful of prodigies over the last 5 decades - you know the ones that lived, breathed and slept guitar? One easily can picture Andy Poxon practicing 10-12 hours daily and the rest of his time spent listening to Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, Luther Allison, Freddy King and Johnny Winter, cramming his head with licks, tricks, chords and tunings.

The one thing that has always been the Achilles heel with most White Blues artists is vocal power/depth and that's one area Andy P. needn't worry about; totally natural vocals with no pretentiousness and a nice and smooth delivery. This boy can emote! I Want You So Bad is the type of slow Blues that Peter Green was famous for and while it may be too early to start making comparisons one can certainly hear both the potential and the influences for Mr. Poxon. I'll Sing The Blues is the second-best commercial track of 13 contained, but unlike most CDs, the last 4 numbers are kick-ass smokers. Usually you'll find 5 or 6 strong tunes leading-off the disc followed by 4 or 5 weak filler numbers. Track #11, I Hate Being Alone is a hot medium tempo shuffle, while Is There Anything I Can Do is a slow burning Chicago-style number, while C'mon Pretty Baby might sound somewhat familiar with snippets of melody lifted from old R&B classics. But Poxon just borrows a little bit and incorporates it into his own ideas, showing more imagination than most. The guitar work on this last number makes a Big Statement to close the show. While Poxon plays through some kind of effects pedal or perhaps a Leslie or a flange, he's uncharacteristically (for a young picker in the 21st Century) mainly effects/gimmicks-free, preferring the clean, lean Fender Strat sound and his solos are short, sweet and melodic. Someone has taught this young man The Right Stuff when it comes to Blues guitar and that sets him apart (and above) 90% of the under-25 players. Add to that his easy-on-the-ears vocals and strong songwriting and we have a REAL winner here. Taste and smarts are rare commodities and Andy Poxon has a big supply of both it seems. 4 Bottles for a fine album from a young artist who is going places. There's hope for the Blues! (A. Grigg)

Five Mile Smile 2018 The Truth About Dogs and Wolves

Five Mile Smile where first formed as a 3 piece 2000 in Belfast Northern Ireland, they play extensively around Ireland for the next 3 years, and recorded some well received songs such as Long Road Out. In 2003 the band mutually decided to call it a day.

In 2014 they met up through Facebook, and decided to get back together, initially for fun, but soon started working on new material, as well as small private gigs. After a few weeks their first new Song "Call to Arms" was recorded. It revived a lot of airplay, and positive reviews. A year later they where a 2 piece band, but continued to make strong music with songs like "Working Man" and “Drinkin All Day". Now it's the bands 4th year since reforming, their latest song "This Is Not A Drill" has just been recorded. This song, along with the old material is available on Bandcamp.

Mike Morgan & The Crawl 2004 Live In Dallas

Genre: Blues
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:06:41
Size: 152,51 MB

United States

Review by Hal Horowitz

Sadly, the majority of Mike Morgan and the Crawl's catalog remains out of print -- his eight releases for the defunct Black Top label had not, as of mid-2004, been reissued -- which leaves him with only one studio disc available. To get some of his earlier music back in the marketplace, Morgan takes the songs to a live setting, resulting in Live in Dallas, recorded at one June 1, 2002 show in his hometown. It's a representative overview of the artist's strengths (solid if not terribly distinctive guitar work) and weaknesses (pleasant but unmemorable vocals) with what seems to be little post-show sweetening. A few of Morgan's originals sound suspiciously like covers ("Cause I Love You" is a ringer for Slim Harpo's "Te-Ni-Nee-Ni-Nu"), but he does resurrect some interesting covers, like Elmore James' "12 Year Old Boy."

While his solos and approach aren't unique, he puts on an impressive and occasionally fiery performance, free of the grandstanding typical of most contemporary blues guitar slingers. Slightly hampering the recording is somewhat muddy sound that dulls the set's edge. It makes for a characteristic album from a talented if not especially distinctive bluesman doing what he does best in front of appreciative fans. Live in Dallas doesn't, however, surpass or replace his rugged and extensive Black Top work, much of it with former vocalist/harpist Lee McBee, which remains the best way to hear Morgan at the top of his game.
