This music is all about setting a party tone. Who cares about the lyrics? The band is tight. Reminds me of the appeal of later James Brown albums: tight bands that rock. This is rock-informed blues, and Slim's band does rock. Blues purists may not like it, but I do. (Sergeant Wendell Baker)

What a genuine surprise this was for me. Being just a little bit beyond my normal time frame of preference for release dates, and judging from the cover that this was at least fairly commercially oriented, I really didn't expect much at all. But having come suggested by my long time trading partner, user Heratius, I dropped the needle in a few spots and heard that it had promise. Normally for me, anything released after about 1976 had better be considerably underground in it's sound, or I'm seldom interested. After fully checking this out, I can safely say this is certainly not underground. What it is, is some of the most competent bar-band rock I've ever heard. No doubt these guys (and one gal) consistently brought the house down in and around their stomping grounds of Charlottesville, VA.

The band's three stars are found in lead guitarist Dick Green, vocalist and harmonica player Doug Jay, and vocalist Lucile Schoettle. Backed by a very solid and talented rhythm section, these three standouts propel their occasionally marginal mat'l into the stratosphere. Both of the instrumentalists are competent enough to salvage some of the weaker cuts with their extraordinary performances. And though I don't particularly care for Ms. Schoettle's powerfully soulful vocal style, there can be no question as to her talent, not to mention stunning good looks. Their album presents a diverse mix of blues, R&B, and blues rock, in a very bar-band friendly style. I couldn't locate any original songs in the set list, but their selection of mat'l is well practiced and suited to their style. This is one of those albums that is better than the some of it's tracks. (tymeshifter)

As you'll hear on this effort, The Shadows have taken blues, rock, country, rock-a-billy, and a number of other musical "spices" and come up with their own boiling gumbo. In the tradition of groups like Little Feat, Los Lobos and The Band, they have developed a unique sound while still being respectful of their influences. It was my sincere pleasure to work with such a fine group. All of us involved hope you will dig what you hear - Turn It Up! (Bryan Cole)
