Looking back to 1972 an obscure rock band from Detroit had just released their second and last album with little fanfare. I picked a promo copy for a dollar a couple of years later and I have managed to hold on to it. They are good band that can handle their instruments.

The first side blasts out with a fuzzed guitar and gravelling vocals with enough force to grab your attention. The side mixes some piano and maintains a heavier sound to the last song "Yonder". On the second side, which is slightly more mellow, there is a remarkably similar song to "The Weight" called "Macon, Georgia". A piano intro called "elana" breaks into the best song called "Lady of the Mountain" to close out the album. (otismidnight)

Carson 1972 Blown

Australia

A popular Melbourne band who functioned between 1971-73. They were known earlier as Carson County Band. Their work was wide-ranging, but can best be described as boogie rock.

Their debut album, ‘Blown’, was a solid effort full of wild bluesy hard rock. It's notable for Sleepy Greg Lawrie's slick slide guitar work and sported a cover with striking (but simple) sci-fi imagery. It contained a version of ‘Boogie’, which differed considerably from the single. The material ranged from powerful numbers like this to laid-back blues evidenced in ‘Up In Queensland’ and ‘Sunday In The City’ with a rock'n'jazz offering in ‘Rock And Roll Game’ and an instrumental, ‘Banana Power’, providing further diversity. Bought this after a strong recommendation from a friend who knows the band. Usually I'm thinking, "ok, yawn, sure your friend has a great band" but WOW, very surprising. Great mix of country/blues & good ol' rock & roll. The guitar player has a very original sound; that boy can play. The bass player as lead singer on a few songs KILLS it. This CD does not disappoint. Best money I've spent on new music as of late. Thank me later. (fatbottomgirl)

There is only a few things that one can say when your favorite type of music is laid down in perfection. Damn....this is hot sizzlin' stuff babee. People who say that they do not love the blues have to be turned on to William Clarke and his band. This is the absolute best place to start. You will create lovers. If not, check their pulse. That toe tappin, hard back line made up of the acoustic stand up bass, the excellent musicianship from those lead guitars that William assembles, along with a legend in chromatic harp that died way before his time, is a crew that can not be matched. The community that is built around the circles that Mr. Clarke was radii makes up the best music on this earth. Can you imagine what this guy has going in heaven? The answer makes me aim even harder for that destiny just so that I can hear it again. For now, this will do just fine....thank you Mr. Clarke (Jim Abt)

review by Cub Koda

Originally released on Rivera Records in 1988, this is the first of a projected series of compact discs chronicling the recording sessions that went into the making of James Harman's first fully formed studio endeavour. Harman approached the entire recording as if each song was a single, using whatever personnel were right for the song -- his regular band on some tunes, horns and other guest artists on others. This initial volume in the set collects the 12 songs that appeared on the original album, which laid the groundwork for Harman's later recorded efforts. As some 53 tunes were recorded in that fertile two-year period between 1985 and the album's final lineup here, this batch is apparently just the tip of iceberg.
