Chris Duarte cut his teeth in Austin, Texas, learning from Joe Ely, Doyle Bramhall and other guitar slingers while developing a distinctive style for his blistering axmanship. The blues-rocker uses his fifth album, "Romp," to pay tribute to his musical heroes. On some tunes the nod is obvious, as with "Like Eric," a takeoff on the music of Eric Johnson in the spirit of John Coltrane's tribute to Sonny Rollins, "Like Sonny." Other cuts show their appreciation through stylistic imitation, such as "101," a Jimi Hendrix takeoff, and "Mr. Neighbor," an ode to the writing of Elvis Costello. It's a comfortable showcase for the talent of the guitarist-vocalist, topped off by a cracking-good version of Bob Dylan's "One More Cup of Coffee." (Jeff Johnson)
