Unlike the majority of the material from Cry of Love's blues-based debut LP, Brother, "Bad Thing" was penned in the studio, while the band recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound. The cut was written quickly, and under the production reigns of John Custer, the rockin' shuffle in the key of D is hot three-minute retro blast of Humble Pie inspired magic, with Kelly Holland's vocals accenting the strong song.

The four song "Bad Thing" single, which opens with a new mix of the song, adds an extended live jammin' version of the track, as well as concert recordings of "Peace Pipe", and a low-slung cover of Willie Dixon's "I Ain't Superstitious".
