John Cephas understood the blues and it shows in his choice of material here, from standard blues, Trouble in Mind and Worried Life Blues (w/a lively piano) to less familiar choices such as Pigmeat and Illinois Blues. John Cephas sounds as if his somehow channeling the late Brownie McGhee on Pigmeat. (Side note: Though Cephas and Wiggins are often compared to Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, they rarely sound like one another on side-by-side listenings of the same tunes. Cephas and Wiggins usually have a softer, if no less true blues sound and Cephas' voice is instantly recognizable. His nod to Brownie McGhee on this Pigmeat is a charming surprise.)

Phil Wiggins' occasionally underrated (why?!) harmonica and vocal harmony talents are highlighted in Illinois Blues and Walkin' Mama. I have more than 6000 blues songs on my computer, but I find myself listening to Illinois Blues over and over. Walkin' Mama is an upbeat number and you can feel these guys enjoyment of this tune; Wiggins' harmony vocals make this a stand-out number They have recorded this song on other CDs, but their harmonies are especially listenable and fun on this version.

The interplay between the two musicians is confident and unhurried and to my mind anyway, perfect on every track here. "Homemade" is a great CD no matter if you're new to the blues or if you're been a blues fan for years. (Linn B)
