The CD "Tommy Cougar and the Stingrays" is a wonderful tribute of sorts to the late SRV. Tommy, who hails from Stockholm, Sweden, has managed to produce a charming tribute CD without simply being a Stevie Ray impersonator. Aside from Tommy's version of "Texas Flood", the other songs on this CD are mostly TC originals, all done in a style and manner highly reminiscent of the fallen giant.

Like most of the CDs I choose to review, this one is strong from start to finish. Tommy is a gifted singer, talented song writer, and a very strong guitarist. I would certainly list Tommy among the names of "relatively unknown guitar greats". The material throughout the CD is excellent, though I particularly liked the powerful slide work on "Kelly's 44 Blues" and the stinging guitar of "Hellfire". The supporting players are quite good, as well. All of these ingredients are blended together nicely to produce this tastefully done and highly enjoyable tribute CD. (
