As a rule John Cephas and Phil Wiggins aren't dark-night-of-the-soul bluesmen, or even bluesmen in the strict sense. Which is to say that other kinds of traditional Southern genres also grace their repertoire, including ballads (e.g., "Darling Cora," rarely covered by African-American performers) and gospel (Wiggins's touching original "Forgiveness"). "Reno Factory," first recorded on a Flying Fish album in the 1980s, puts rarely heard lyrics to the often-heard, Reconstruction-era folk song known variously as "Reuben's Train," "900 Miles," and more.

The fun these guys are having through it all is palpable, and it's infectious. This is African-American roots music at its most extroverted and celebratory. I have no doubt that Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, two giants of Piedmont music and Cephas and Wiggins's most direct inspiration, would have loved it. The tradition, it is clear, remains in good hands. (Jerome Clark)

Gerald Clark 2012 Black Water

Genre: Blues
Rate: 192 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:32:35
Size: 44,78 MB

South Africa

Aesthetically, the Black Water album cover is simple, dark and has just a hint of grain. It shouts low-down dirty blues without trying too hard to look edgy. The night-time landscape shot of a bayou-looking river scene on the inner sleeves of the cover was a great choice and the complimentary fold-out Black Water illustration inside is a pleasantly surprising find. However, the lyrics of the songs were not included in the sleeve. At first, I thought it would have been nice to follow the words of the songs and gain a better understanding of what Clark is singing about, but after a while I realized that his songs are so damn catchy that – for better or worse – you’ll learn the lyrics in no time.

On this album, Clark remains true to his blues/country-soul style from the first riff to the last. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he hopped straight off the back of a dusty, old pick-up truck and into the studio. He offers the listener a range of sounds that have a distinct American, deep-south feel from good ol’ fashioned blues to 50s-style rock-a-billy tunes. (http://samusicscene.co.za/)

I've followed Aynsley for a while and he has hit it out of the park with Equilibrium. A top-shelf rocking guitar player, he shows off his voice and a more refined sound with greater range on this offering. But don't worry, he still comes to rock especially on Time's Up, Big Sleep, and Sugar Low. He also has a cool acoustic cover of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy that works in a bluesy way. Running Out On Me is a great rocking bluesy shuffle. You've got to hear this! (John C.)

John Cephas understood the blues and it shows in his choice of material here, from standard blues, Trouble in Mind and Worried Life Blues (w/a lively piano) to less familiar choices such as Pigmeat and Illinois Blues. John Cephas sounds as if his somehow channeling the late Brownie McGhee on Pigmeat. (Side note: Though Cephas and Wiggins are often compared to Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, they rarely sound like one another on side-by-side listenings of the same tunes. Cephas and Wiggins usually have a softer, if no less true blues sound and Cephas' voice is instantly recognizable. His nod to Brownie McGhee on this Pigmeat is a charming surprise.)

Phil Wiggins' occasionally underrated (why?!) harmonica and vocal harmony talents are highlighted in Illinois Blues and Walkin' Mama. I have more than 6000 blues songs on my computer, but I find myself listening to Illinois Blues over and over. Walkin' Mama is an upbeat number and you can feel these guys enjoyment of this tune; Wiggins' harmony vocals make this a stand-out number They have recorded this song on other CDs, but their harmonies are especially listenable and fun on this version.

The interplay between the two musicians is confident and unhurried and to my mind anyway, perfect on every track here. "Homemade" is a great CD no matter if you're new to the blues or if you're been a blues fan for years. (Linn B)

Skin 1998 Hasta La Vista, Baby!

Genre: Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 01:28:27
Size: 202,35 MB

United Kingdom

"Krusher Intro" says it all. The British media turned their backs on good quality, exciting rock music years ago, at a time when British rock music was in resurgence. The result of this is that Skin found themselves in a position where they only had one option - to break up.

This album was their parting shot. And what a parting shot. Never really a huge venue band, Skin thrived on the intimacy of small places. The fact that those small venues were always packed to the rafters should have been an indication of their popularity.

But chart success was always going to elude them. Nobody wants to listen to loud rock music on the radio anymore. And we are talking loud!!! This album seems to split between CD 1 which concentrates on the "Experience Electric" album, and CD 2 which showcases the others - sadly no longer available (thanks EMI!!).

There are no standout moments on this album - they are all standout moments. Check out the rendition of "Mah Na Mah Na", a tip of the hat to the Muppets, and an indication that the band never took themselves seriously. Also included is their version of "Unbelievable", a version which literally knocks the socks off the original.

If a highpoint had to be picked, however, it would have to be "Tower Of Strength", "Perfect Day" and "Colour Blind", a slap in the face of those who think that rock musicians cannot write thoughtful lyrics. As a swansong, this was certainly the way to go. But the swansong should never have come. Music like this deserves more coverage both in Europe and America. (a customer)
