The three-act play Mule Bone, a collaboration between Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes based upon Hurston's story The Bone of Contention, went unpublished and unproduced for nearly 60 years. When it was finally mounted by the Lincoln Center Theater, Taj Mahal was the logical choice for the critical role of composer/musical performer. He created a score that includes six tunes with Langston Hughes lyrics, and arranged it for his own keyboards, bass, guitars, harmonica and banjo, plus six other musicians. This is Taj Mahal the blues musician par excellence.
