Mark & The Pentones 2011 We Only Drink At Work

Genre: Blues
Rate: 175 kbps VBR / 44100
Time: 01:19:36
Size: 101,39 MB

United States

On this 11-track CD, recorded live at The Funky Pirate, Penton and band mates Eddie Christmas (drums, percussion) and Thomas McDonald (bass, backup vocals) offer up a smooth mix of slow bluesy numbers and lively up-tempo arrangements. They are, in most cases, long enough for all three musicians to stretch their musical legs and display their respective talents. And, in addition to being an extraordinarily gifted musician and vocalist, Penton is also an accomplished songwriter with four cleverly worded original compositions. “Sunday Funnies,” the opening track, likens the song’s protagonist to a comic strip character (“I feel like a joke / I spend all my money and you love me till I’m broke”). Nicely done covers include “Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley,” Neil Young’s “Old Man,” a medley of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” and The Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post,” and a medley of classic Mardi Gras Indian songs (“Big Chief,” “Hey Pocky Way” and “Treme Song”). And, if “Don’t Leave Nothing Behind”—another Penton original—doesn’t convince you that he is one of the best guitarists around, nothing will. His solo at the song’s end is a killer! (Dean M. Shapiro)

Lamont Cranston Blues Band 1997 Roll With Me

Review by Cub Koda

A longtime Midwest club favorite, the Lamont Cranston Blues Band comes up to the plate with 12 strong original tracks showing that modern blues has some other agenda than merely replicating one's record collection.

Guitarist/vocalist/harmonica man Pat Hayes is the heart and soul of the band, equally adept at burning up the fretboard (as he does on "West Side Woman") or blowing the walls down as he does on the title track. The genres are all familiar -- as are many of the lyrics -- but what Hayes creates out of these simple tools is something new and different enough to warrant a second look. On "Hip Cat Bounce," he proves that modern blues guitar can be lowdown and dirty without a lot of note flurries or extraneous rock additions to get the point across, while on "Country Farm," he weds Little Walter-like swoops from his harp to the most Excello-like of backgrounds. He gets jazzy on "I Couldn't Put You Down" and utterly soulful on "Don't Take Me Down Again."

A record so deceptively original and simple, it may take a couple of listens for it all to sink in, but one that's well worth the time put in to do it.

Tomás Doncker 2015 Church is Burning Down

Tomás Doncker is back with a truly explosive socially conscious single "Church is Burning Down" – a track that provides a glimpse into the bitter realities of modern race relations in America. This is just the first part in Doncker's greatest artistic statement to date, his forthcoming album "The Mess We Made."

It all started on The day of the Charleston Massacre. Given the fact that the recent "Road to Charleston" was emotionally taxing enough for me (aka:Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Ferguson, Eric Garner, Baltimore - not to mention some of the less publicized events around the country and the world), the heinous events which occurred on June 17, 2015 pushed me over the edge. I was overwhelmed with rage, hatred, confusion and disillusionment. I had no place to put these feelings. I had no idea how to process them. So, in a selfish attempt to maintain my own sanity I did the only thing I could do -- write about it. By Sunday, June 21, I had written 4 new songs . Within ten days I had recorded the 8 songs that would become "The Mess We Made".

Yes, it does feel like I've only put a band-aid on this bullet wound, a sonic salve to temporarily ease the sting. Maybe one day the bleeding will stop...Maybe...One day... (Tomás Doncker, NYC, 2015)

Gary Moore 2002 Scars

Genre: Blues-Rock
Rate: 320 kbps CBR / 44100
Time: 00:59:21
Size: 135,89 MB

United Kingdom

Scars is a 2002 album by the Gary Moore-led blues rock group called Scars (not to be confused with the seminal Edinburgh post-punk group called Scars).

In 2002 Gary Moore decided to form a band with ex-Skunk Anansie bassist Cass Lewis and Primal Scream drummer Darrin Mooney called Scars. Their studio album "Scars", released on September 2nd on Sanctuary Records, includes compositions reminiscent of the sound of artists like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, in a modern way. (https://en.wikipedia.org/)

Firmly blues based... but make no mistake, this is maximum hard rock of the first order. Gary has strapped the Strat back on and has formed a true power trio that owes more to Hendrix, Trower and Stevie Ray than any of the "Kings" (BB, Albert and Freddie). Fans of "Still Got The Blues" hoping for something more in that vein are going to have to wait a bit longer. This disc is raw, blistering, earthy, albeit bluesy rock and roll as only Gary can do it. On "Back To The Blues" you could kind of get an inkling as to where some of this was coming from, but Gary is such an incredible virtuoso that you never really know what direction he's going to head in. This disc takes the seeds of Hendrix's genius to its full fruition by one of the only people on the planet talented enough to pick up on wholly original musical ideas and run with them. My hat is also off to the awesome rhythm section of Cass and Darrin who inject a nice burst of energy to compliment all the guitar pyrotechnics.
